Top Seeds Advance in Singles at JSM Challenger
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The two top-seeded players in the singles draw advanced on Thursday to the semifinals at the Atkins Tennis Center. No. 1 seed Jared Donaldson and No. 2 seed Henri Laaksonen each won their respective matches by straight sets.
Donaldson defeated qualifier, Bradley Klahn, 6-4, 6-4 and Laaksonen defeated qualifier, Marcos Giron, 6-4, 6-2 to end play on Thursday.
In doubles, former Illini Ruan Roelofse and Tucker Vorster fell to Bambridge and Broady, 4-6, 7-6(6), 10-5. Current Illini freshman, Gui Gomes, and former Illini All-American, Jared Hiltzik, were defeated, 6-4, 6-4 by Sandgren and Krajicek. The duo has reached the quarterfinal round or later in each of the past three ATP Challengers.
Jared Donaldson [USA], the No. 108-ranked player on the ATP Tour, received the No. 1 seed in the singles main draw. The No. 141-ranked player, Henri Laaksonen, earned the No. 2 seed.
The 2016 JSM Challenger will complete singles qualifying play on Monday, with the singles main draw beginning tomorrow and the finals set for Nov. 19th. Doubles play is set to commence on Nov. 14th and the finals also being played on Nov. 19th.
The JSM Challenger is part of the Australian Open Wild Card Challenge, where the winner will receive a wild card into the main draw of Australian Open in January.
